Trainings

The Mid-Atlantic Regional RESNA Conference, "Connections for Life," will be held on November 8 & 9, 1996, at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. The conference is designed for anyone interested in the practical applications of technology for people with disabilities. There will be two advanced workshops prior to the start of the conference on Friday morning: Cushion Selection for Wheelchair Seating and a Review of Graphical Representation in AAC. The conference will include topics on: Augmentative Communication; Seating & Mobility; Computer Access; Funding; Certification; Transportation; Recreation; Technology Transfer; Virtual Reality; Integration of Powered Mobility and AAC; and Current Policy Issues. Advanced DynaVoxTM 2c - This is a continuation of Introduction to DynaVoxTM 2c. This course is open to anyone who is familiar with the basics of the DynaVoxTM 2c operations. In this course, participants will learn additional screen organization techniques, programming short cuts and advanced techniques, and be better able to adjust selection method options based on individual needs. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to have individual needs and questions discussed.

Hearing & Visual Impairments: A Technology Overview - Participants will become familiar with assistive technology for people with hearing and visual impairments. Amplification and alerting devices and aids for low vision (including magnification and tactile) will be demonstrated. Telecommunications for people with hearing and/or speech impairments will be covered.

Introduction to DynavoxTM 2c - This is an introductory course on basic DynaVoxTM 2c programming and operations. Participants of this course will be introduced to the DynaVoxTM 2c hardware and software, and become familiar with adjusting controls, creating communication screens, and selection method options.

The Internet: Access for All - In this introductory workshop, participants will learn what the Internet is and the many ways in which they can gain access. Instruction will be given on finding topics of interest on the World Wide Web, using E-mail, downloading free software, and accessing newsgroups. Participants will also be provided with a list of Web sites of particular interest to people with disabilities.

Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) Training - In this workshop, participants will learn the variety of telecommunications options for people with hearing and/or speech impairments. All participants will have hands-on experience with the TDD, which allows people to communicate over the phone line with someone else who has a TDD. Relay service and voice carry over will also be discussed.

Assistive Technology & Funding Workshop - In this workshop participants will be given an overview of AT devices and different funding services available. Funding options such as public and private insurance, public education, vocational rehabilitation, and social security administration's work incentives will all be discussed.

Disability and Assistive Technology - Participants in this workshop will learn more about impairments associated with a variety of disabilities (i.e. cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, CVA, etc.) and their characteristics. Participants will be able to apply assistive technology to compensate for the impairment when presented with case studies.

Introduction to DynavoxTM 2c - This is an introductory course on basic DynaVoxTM 2c programming and operations. Participants of this course will be introduced to the DynaVoxTM 2c hardware and software, and become familiar with adjusting controls, creating communication screens, and selection method options.

Learning Disabilities and AT - Participants in this workshop will learn how assistive technology can promote inclusion and when assistive technology intervention services are warranted. Attendees will learn more about impairments associated with learning disabilities and their characteristics. Participants will be able to suggest assistive technology options that might be applicable when presented with case examples.

Sign Language - Attendees will acquire a functional sign language vocabulary of approximately 250 signs as well as learn about individual considerations when working with individuals who cannot use speech to communicate. Information will be provided on when, why, and how to teach sign language. A brief overview of AAC systems will also be provided. Focus will be primarily on "low tech" systems.

Computer Access - Come and learn about all the options in using the standard keyboard and the mouse that are available. This workshop will demonstrate that people of all abilities can use the computer. Come and familiarize yourself with the adaptive technologies available, such as Intellikeys, Headmouse, DragonDictate and much more!!

Disability Awareness Training - Participants in this workshop will learn about ways in which assistive technology can help meet ADA standards and promote inclusion. Attendees will learn more about impairments associated with a variety of disabilities and will be able to suggest assistive technology that might be applicable.
